Hall Engineering employed as many as one thousand personnel in the mid 1960’s and the company had gained an excellent reputation for manufacturing and general engineering. Rolls Royce was considered to be the premier engineering company in Shrewsbury and the Sentinel apprentices in 1967 would look down upon us in the second division at Halls. However, the new recruits at Halls during that year, including myself were more interested and excited about their future with the firm to worry about the league tables. Norton Asquith Ltd located on Featherbed Lane was the other engineering firm in the town and they designed and manufactured Grinding machines for customers at home and abroad. It was the custom for workers to frequently move in between factories in those days just to gain a higher rate of pay. |
